I took my cat to Ohana to get tested for FeLV/FIV since he was a new kitty we adopted to join our family. I had no prior knowledge of FeLV, and learned the hard way doing research after he tested positive for the in-house test done at the clinic. They sent out his blood to the laboratory to do a PCR test for FeLV, as well as me looking into a link directly from the laboratory. In this link, (photo attached) it shows that if a cat tests positive in-house, that a PCR and ELISA test should be sent out to confirm(or discount) the initial positive. The PCR test came back negative, and the vet said that because he had a positive ELISA test and a negative PCR, that he had a regressive infection of the virus. Now, at this point, because i had read the the diagnostics for FeLV, i thought the vet had sent a PCR and ELISA combo to the laboratory to get done. I asked for the results to be sent to me. I looked at the results, and noticed that ONLY THE PCR was sent to the laboratory, and the ELISA test was only done in-house. That is not how the diagnostics should be, so I went to a different vet. This other vet thankfully checked with IDEXX and came up with the test ID that would best confirm (laboratory-done ELISA test). Come to our surprise that this test comes back completely negative. Negative ELISA, negative PCR. This concludes that our kitty does not even have the disease. Prior to this, during the night that the diagnosis was wrongfully given, we (the family) were thinking we would have to give him up, due to the other kitties in our household. I can’t imagine if there have been people that have possibly given up their pet, or worse, euthanasia, due to an improper diagnosis. I am so glad I did my own reading and advocated for my cat, because appearantly a couple days of reading, and a second vet to get the tests PROPERLY done, made all the difference.
